Contemporary Handbag Brands to Know: Form, Leather and Detail

Contemporary luxury is a useful starting point for discovery, but it is not a single look. Folded leather, a defined flap, a curved body or a considered panel line can each create a distinct point of view. Begin with the designs that interest you, then look more closely at how they work.

Polène: exploring form through folds and curves

For a shopper interested in a sculptural outline, Cyme is one Polène design to investigate. Its official description presents two configurations through the placement of its sides and handles. Numéro Dix offers another direction in a smaller, curved form. The useful question is which kind of volume suits your wardrobe. Explore the particular design and finish rather than treating a brand name as a complete specification.

Songmont: a change in how you carry

Luna provides one way into Songmont’s collection. The official Ivory product page describes a convertible crescent design with several carrying arrangements. It is worth investigating if you enjoy a bag that changes position or shape within an outfit. Consider whether you will use those arrangements in practice; a feature becomes valuable when it responds to the way you live.

Strathberry: a recognisable hardware gesture

Mosaic offers a clear example of Strathberry’s structured direction, with a top handle and a front Music Bar detail. If hardware is part of what draws you to a bag, look at how that detail sits within the whole silhouette. Then examine the opening, interior and carry options. A recognisable element can be appealing without answering every practical question about the design.

DeMellier: distinct roles within a wardrobe

The Vancouver and The New York illustrate two different needs: a more compact flap silhouette and a larger tote direction. They are useful references when deciding whether your next purchase is for a smaller daily carry or a work-oriented load. Compare the exact model, not the brand in the abstract. A collection can contain bags with very different openings, dimensions and device specifications.

AKINNA: The Language of Structure

AKINNA approaches the handbag through proportion, panelling and the relationship between body and handle. Designed by Annika Saraf, Doppio, Lia and Melissa Vanity offer distinct expressions of that perspective. Full-grain calf leather and colourway-specific finishes give each form a different surface. A tote, a horizontal everyday silhouette and a geometric occasion bag can share a visual language while serving different routines.

Build a shortlist around three questions

First, what outline do you want to see against your clothes? Second, what is the largest item the bag must hold? Third, how do you prefer to carry it? Those answers make a brand shortlist more useful. Choose two or three specific designs, compare their current specifications, and review destination-specific prices, delivery and returns. If AKINNA’s approach to structure speaks to you, explore the bag guide to find the form that fits your day.
